We recommend starting at 5 years old. The reason for this is that the martial arts styles we teach are very interactive, with a focus on partnered training as opposed to kata/forms. This is very beneficial for the effectiveness of the techniques and for the kids to learn to work with other kids safely, but kids under 5 may struggle. While we have had some success with 4 year olds, we believe waiting until 5 provides the best chance of them having a great first experience.
Yes! We always encourage new members to try out several classes for free to make sure they like the classes and that it fits with their schedule before committing to a membership.
Not at first - when you are trying out your first few free trial classes you only need to wear normal athletic clothes you feel comfortable in (no big pockets or zippers). We have gear available to borrow if gloves/shinguards/gi tops etc are required for the day's techniques.
Once you decide to go ahead with a membership, you will want to purchase your own gear. We have amazing gear available from Raven Fightwear and RDX to keep you safe and stylish!
At first, nothing! There is no cost for trying out several trial classes to make sure you like it before committing to a membership. At that point there are several options available depending on the length of membership you choose, and we offer family discounts as well as military/police/firefighter/EMT plans. This is a common and valid concern - Lots of people want to enjoy the benefits of training in martial arts but not everyone wants to be a professional fighter! Safety and control are always our first priority, especially for kids classes. Body and leg contact are controlled and head contact is between simulated (no contact) and light contact with headgear and mouthguards depending on how advanced the student is and what they are preparing for. No one will ever be forced to take part in sparring with head contact, and there will be no full/hard head contact permitted at all.
Yes, absolutely! We have bleacher seating upstairs and comfy couches on the main level to watch from, although if you would prefer just to drop them off that's fine as well.
Not at all! Martial arts training is meant to be a great workout in itself, and our classes are all taught in a format that allows each individual student to challenge themselves without pushing too hard and risking injury.
The short answer is no. We always encourage students to try competing at least once, but it is not a requirement and we will never put undue pressure on anyone to compete if they aren't comfortable with it. Competition is an important part of optimal growth and progress in the martial arts, as it tests ones ability to apply their techniques in controlled and safe settings, but while under stress against unfamiliar opponents. This goes a long way for building confidence that those skills will be there when you really need them!
